At long last, Allie Wooldridge wins one at the buzzer

CEDAR RAPIDS — Through middle school, high school and all those AAU tournaments, Allie Wooldridge had never hit a game-winning shot.

“I’ve missed a lot of them,” she said.

Not this one.

Wooldridge did a nice impersonation of Arike Ogumbowale, taking an inbounds pass and hitting an 18-footer from the right baseline at the horn to give the 3A/4A/5A Select Gray team a 58-56 win over 3A/4A/5A Select White in the spotlight contest of the IGCA/Larry Niemeyer Senior All-Star Games on Saturday at Johnson Hall.

“I was surprised they drew that play up for me,” said Wooldridge, an all-stater for Center Point-Urbana and a Drake University signee. “Chloe (Rice, of Marion) is an amazing passer, and she got me the ball in a good spot.”

Like Ogumbowale, whose buzzer-beater gave Notre Dame the NCAA championship last week, Wooldridge got the ball with 3 seconds left, took a dribble and let fly. And like Ogumbowale, she nailed it.

Pleasant Valley’s Ellie Spelhaug tied the game for the White squad with a 3-pointer.

Wooldridge’s team was coached by the legendary couple of Bob and Sharon Hanson, who coached her future college coach (Drake’s Jennie Baranczyk) at West Des Moines Dowling in the 1990s.

“They taught us a lot,” Wooldridge said. “It’s not often that an all-star coach teaches and corrects you like that.”

Iowa City West’s Logan Cook led the Gray team with 12 points, and Crestwood’s Shannon Pisney added 10.

Sienna Durr of Grinnell paced the White squad with 12 points and eight rebounds. Durr will play next year at Columbia University, an Ivy League school.

“I wanted a school with strong academics that’s far away,” Durr said. “It’s a big difference ... Grinnell, Iowa, to New York City.

“This was a lot of fun. I’ve never played against Logan Cook, and I think I held my own.”

In the day’s first game, Red Oak’s Sierra Athen compiled 26 points (on 12-of-16 shooting) and 11 rebounds to lead the 3A Gray squad to a 102-59 win over 3A White. The Gray team broke it open in the second half after leading, 41-33, at intermission.

Athen was the MVP of the Gray team, and Gabby Schwarting of Osage hit 6 of 8 shots from long range in a 20-point outing for the winners. Albia’s Hannah Isley was the White MVP in a 14-point, nine-rebound effort.

MVP Amara Lipsey (Ames) and Keeley Petzenhauser (Spencer) scored 15 points apiece to lift the 4A/5A Gray team to an 85-76 win over 4A/5A White in Saturday’s nightcap. Kira Arthofer of Pleasant Valley was the White MVP after scoring 12 points.

The event concludes with 1A and 2A games Sunday.
