Iowa City West rolls to season-opening dual victory

Trojans open with four pins and top C.R. Jefferson, 48-22

IOWA CITY — Energy and intensity.

Apparently, a little more has found its way into the Iowa City West wrestling room these days. The Trojans transferred some of both to the mat to start the season.

West opened with four consecutive pins and rolled to a 48-22 victory over Cedar Rapids Jefferson in a Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division dual Thursday night at home. The Trojans won 10 of 14 weights, earning bonus points in seven bouts.

“The theme of this year is making everything count, so when we’re coming in there we might not be in there three hours a night but the hour and 45 minutes we are there is some high productivity,” West first-year head coach Nate Moore said. “High energy, intense, it’s good.”

The Trojans’ lineup is young, starting seven freshman, but the dual started with a jolt from upper classmen. Senior Mason Sorge started the dual with a fall before junior Will Hoeft and senior Landon Green recorded first-period pins at 182 and 195.

Freshman Brett Pelfrey trailed most of his match with P.J. Smith, tying it up in the third and getting a fall in 4:41 to put West up, 24-0, after four.

“I think they were pretty pumped up,” said Moore, a four-time state finalist and two-time titlist for West who took over for Hall of Famer Mark Reiland. “The adrenaline was flowing for the first home meet.”

Hunter Garvin (120) added a technical fall and returning state medalist Graham Gambrall tallied six takedowns in a major decision at 138. West was aggressive, amassing 28 takedowns and 103 total match points.

“We want to get the first takedown,” Gambrall said. “We want to force the pressure and score as many points as we can.

“We want to get the culture back to where it used to be. We’re just trying to score points the entire points. We’re trying to win every single match and every single dual.”

Jefferson (0-1) had a few bright spots. Heavyweight Dawson Sweet and Nathan Lauterwasser (126) won by fall. Sweet needed just 37 to stick Brock Pelfrey for the J-Hawks’ first victory. Cameron Burnell (145) and 152-pounder Antonio Pagel notched consecutive technical falls, combining for 33 points.
