CEDAR RAPIDS — Cedar Rapids Prairie Coach Todd Rima realized the postseason path wouldn’t be easy when substate assignments were released two weeks ago.

The Hawks now know their road to the state baseball tournament.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association released Class 4A and 3A postseason pairings Thursday. Class 4A fifth-ranked Prairie is attempting to earn its third straight state berth and is the top seed of Substate 4, hosting Waterloo East in the first round Friday, July 13.

Small-school pairings

The Iowa high school baseball postseason is taking shape, as the IHSAA released district and substate pairings for the smaller two classes Tuesday.

Bettendorf plays second-seeded Western Dubuque at Farley and No. 3 seed Linn-Mar hosts Pleasant Valley in the other two opening-round games of the six-team field.

“There are good front-line arms in our substate,” Rima said. “We knew we had to play our best at the end of the season. That is what we’re working on now.”

The best 4A seed advancing to the second round receives a bye and will host the substate final. Prairie will play at home until a possible return to Principal Park in Des Moines.

Prairie has won nine of its last 10 games against 4A competition, including four straight. The Hawks are 24-8 overall after reaching the state quarterfinals a year ago and winning the 2016 state championship. They have won 10 of their last 13 games and lead the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division.

Rima said the Hawks are closer to peaking because pitchers have better command, cutting down on walks.

“We’re as close as we have been all year,” Rima said. “The last 12 games we’ve gotten our pitching staff in sync.

“We’re really close. We have another week to figure it out. I like where we’re at.”

Eighth-ranked Iowa City West is also a top seed, hosting Muscatine in the first round in Substate 6. The Trojans (23-9) are joined by second-seeded Cedar Rapids Jefferson and No. 3 seed Cedar Rapids Washington. The J-Hawks (23-10) open with a home game against Burlington. The Warriors (18-13) host Davenport North.

“Like every postseason, you don’t know how it will go,” said West Coach Charlie Stumpff, who has led the Trojans to eight state trips and five state title games in the last nine years. “We’re just going to go in leery about what Muscatine brings to us.”

The J-Hawks and Warriors have hovered near the top 10 most of the season with Jefferson still receiving votes in the recent Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association rankings released Monday. Stumpff noted the J-Hawks have the resume to be a top-seeded team.

“Those two teams will be there with us,” Stumpff said. “It’s going to be whoever shows up to play on that day.”

In other 4A substates, fourth-seeded Cedar Rapids Kennedy plays No. 3 seed Iowa City High at Mercer Park. They are grouped in the same substate as top-seeded and fourth-ranked Southeast Polk and No. 2 seed Marshalltown.

This season marks the first year postseason seeding was placed in baseball coaches hands. Substate coaches held seed meetings and hashed out team placement.

Rima said Substate 4 seeding was unanimous. All six coaches had the same one through six and consensus came easy.

“We got lucky,” Rima said. “It was pretty easy.

“To see it all come in the way it did, I was a little surprised as well.”

Stumpff said there were small differences of opinion, but they were easily addressed. He said he had no complaints and in theory this should be a better way than the old system that awarded points for a win based on class of the opponent (four points for a 4A victory, three for 3A victory, etc.) and losses to teams in a larger class through the first 25 games.

I hope everyone understands there’s no perfection in any way,” Stumpff said. “You do the best you can. The big thing is for the state to get the initial split right. I think they did a good job.”

In Class 3A, sixth-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier will host a district. The top-seeded Saints face Anamosa in a district semifinal. Marion plays DeWitt Central in the other district semifinal. Xavier (24-9) has won 11 straight games, leading the MVC Mississippi Division.

“We’ve been locked in,” Xavier Coach Dan Halter said about the streak. “When we show up ready to go, if we’re mentally engaged, that’s all we can ask and whatever happens happens.”

Fifth-seeded Solon (25-9) also will host a district, opening with Keokuk. Clear Creek Amana and Mount Pleasant round out the Spartans' district that pairs with a district at Fairfield. Iowa City Liberty’s first postseason game will be against Washington (Iowa) at Fairfield.

Large-class Iowa high school baseball teams now know their postseason destinations.
