Coverage from Northwestern

Without Tyler Cook, Hawkeyes still beat Northwestern

MVP:With Tyler Cook out with a sore knee, freshman Joe Wieskamp carried Iowa to a win at the renovated Welsh-Ryan Arena. Wieskamp had 19 points on 7-for-11 shooting and seven rebounds as the Hawkeyes ended an eight-game road losing skid that dated back to a 104-97 overtime win at Illinois on Jan. 11, 2018 last season.

Turning point:Iowa didn't make a shot for the first 4:41 of the second half after the game was tied 34-34 at the break, but didn't wilt on the road. A 19-4 run powered by Wieskamp gave the Hawkeyes a 56-48 lead with 11:14 left and they never trailed again. Wieskamp had a steal and layup, backdoor cut for a layup, go-ahead 3-pointer and a three-point play that resulted in Northwestern star Vic Law's fourth foul during that stretch.

Key stat: 17-19.Iowa accumulated 17 second-half points at the free throw line, missing just a pair. That also meant Northwestern dealt with significant foul trouble. Center Derek Pardon fouled out, and Vic Law, Barret Benson and Ryan Taylor all had four fouls. Luka Garza was particularly impressive, making 10 of 11 free throws for the game.
