Fun Facts, Nebraska-Iowa: Stephen King edition

Does “Black Friday” sound fun to you? What’s next, “Morbid Monday?” “Woeful Wednesday?” “Traumatic Thursday?”

Well, let’s not get hung up on the ill-conceived nickname of the day after Thanksgiving. Instead, focus on the Fun Facts involving that day’s Nebraska-Iowa football game. Here we go!

1. Last year’s Iowa-Nebraska game was 14-14 at halftime. The Hawkeyes won, 56-14.

2. The margin of victory was Iowa’s largest in the series history, which dates to 1891.

3. Iowa has won the last three games in the 48-game series. It has never won four in a row.

4. The Hawkeyes have 43 interception returns for touchdowns in their history. The shortest was one of the biggest, then-freshman Parker Hesse’s 4-yarder at Nebraska in 2015 to help cap a 12-0 regular-season.

5. Iowa’s last walk-off loss against anyone was at home against Nebraska in 2014 when Tommy Armstrong Jr., threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Bell in overtime.

6. Nebraska’s Devine Ozigbo will be the sixth Big Ten player Iowa has faced that has rushed for 1,000 yards this season or went on to rush for 1,000 yards.

7. Huskers receiver J.D. Spielman was Minnesota’s high school “Mr. Football” in 2015. Iowa safety Amani Hooker was among the 10 finalists.

8. Iowa is tied for third nationally with 17 interceptions, one behind Maryland and Utah State. The Hawkeyes led the nation in that category last season with 21.

9. The first 16 of those picks were by defensive backs. The 17th was by linebacker Kristian Welch.

10. Nebraska was ranked No. 7 by Associated Press after starting the 2016 season with seven wins. It has lost 19 of 29 games since.

11. In Big Ten games, Iowa has outscored its opponents by 106 points. It is 4-4. Northwestern has outscored its league opponents by 45 points. It is 7-1.

12. Dominique Dafney of Iowa and Marquel Dismuke of Nebraska both have one punt return for 26 yards.

13. Iowa’s most-recent shutout was against Illinois, last Saturday. The most-recent time the Hawkeyes have been blanked was in 2000, against Illinois.

14. Carol Moseke Frost, the mother of Nebraska Coach Scott Frost, is from Cedar Rapids. That’s Cedar Rapids, Neb. She was a U.S. Olympian, and also has been an assistant high school football coach.

15. The Baltimore Ravens’ starting left guard is Marshal Yanda of Iowa. The Raven’s starting right guard is Alex Lewis of Nebraska.

16. This will be Nebraska’s 29th-straight year of playing on Black Friday. Before that streak began, Steely Dan released a single called “Black Friday” from its “Katy Lied” album of 1975. Rolling Stone said the song portrays “a financial meltdown as an excuse for end-of-the-world revelry.”

17. Ben Leber will be the analyst on Fox’s telecast of this game. Leber is from Council Bluffs, but didn’t play football at Iowa or Nebraska. He was a linebacker at Kansas State before going on to a 10-year NFL career.

18. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Iowa had 38 cities of 10,000 or more people and Nebraska had 16. The Hawkeyes beat the Huskers 38-17 in 2013.

19. It’s 326 miles from Omaha to Ogallala. And you still have 49 miles to go on I-80 before you’re in Sedgwick, Colo.

20. Stephen King has used Nebraska as a setting in his novels and short stories. Iowa has a representative in the U.S. Congress named Steve King.
