Fun Facts, Maryland-Iowa: Grateful Dead Edition

David Hasselhoff is from Maryland. How about that?

When you think of Maryland-Iowa, you think of … I have no idea. Toll roads between there and here?

Nonetheless, here are the Fun Facts for Saturday’s Maryland-Iowa football game:

1. The teams are 1-1 all-time against each other. Iowa scored 31 points in both games.

2. Iowa has allowed six quarterback sacks. Every other Big Ten team has surrendered at least 10.

3. The Hawkeyes lead the nation in kickoff-return average with 33.1 yards. Ihmir Smith-Marsette has five kickoff-returns for an average of 37.4 yards, which would lead the nation if he had enough returns to qualify.

4. Iowa hasn’t returned a kickoff for a touchdown since Jordan Cotton in 2012. Maryland’s Ty Johnson did it once last season and has done it once this season.

5. It’s Iowa’s Homecoming. The Hawkeyes have won 18 of their last 23 Homecoming games. The Hawkeyes wrecked Homecomings the previous two weeks at Minnesota and Indiana by winning.

6. Maryland running backs Anthony McFarland and Johnson average 8.9 and 8.1 yards per carry, respectively. Johnson averaged 9.1 (110 carries, 1,004 yards) in 2016.

7. Hawkeye safety Jake Gervase and Terrapin cornerback Darnell Savage have interceptions against Boston College in bowl games. Gervase got his last year in the Pinstripe Bowl. Savage’s was in the 2016 Quick Lane Bowl.

8. Savage leads the Big Ten in interceptions this season with four.

9. Maryland is the only team to beat Texas this season. But the Terrapins lost to Temple, which lost to Villanova, which lost to Towson, Stony Brook and Maine.

10. Terrapins interim head coach Matt Canada is Maryland’s fourth offensive coordinator in the last four years.

11. Hawkeyes quarterback Nate Stanley is Mr. October. He leads the nation in October touchdown passes, with 10.

12. Iowa is ranked in the coaches’ Top 25 this week, its first time in that poll since December 2016. Maryland hasn’t been ranked by the coaches since the end of the 2010 season, when it was 24th after beating East Carolina in the Military Bowl.

13. The Hawkeyes and Terrapins both had just 66 yards of offense in a game last season. Iowa’s 66 was at Wisconsin, Maryland’s at Ohio State.

14. Maryland’s crowd for its home game against Rutgers last Saturday was announced as 34,972. Iowa’s average home crowd in 1946 was 39,562.

15. Mark Jones is ESPN2’s play-by-play announcer for this game. He had the same role for Iowa’s memorable wins over Penn State, Purdue and Michigan in 2002.

16. As of 2016, the population of Manchester, Iowa, was 5,053 and the population of Manchester, Md., was 4,818.

17. Maryland’s two U.S. Senators are Democrats. Iowa’s are Republicans. Seven of Maryland’s eight U.S. Congress representatives are Democrats. Three of Iowa’s four are Republicans.

18. Famous Maryland natives include Francis Scott Key, Harriet Tubman, Babe Ruth and, of course, David Hasselhoff.

19. Maryland’s players got a booster banned from a team flight because he made insensitive comments about the June death of Terrapin player Jordan McNair.

20. “Terrapin Station” was a 1977 album by the Grateful Dead. It included the Dead’s cover of Martha Reeves and the Vandellas’ hit, “Dancing in the Street.”
