Fun Facts, Northwestern-Iowa: Meghan Markle edition

Are they really Fun Facts if they don’t get a proper introduction? We’re about to find out with this batch for Northwestern-Iowa.

1. Northwestern has won its last six road games.

2. This is the sixth-straight season in which Iowa is favored to beat the Wildcats. The Hawkeyes won three of those previous five games.

3. Last year’s Northwestern 17-10 overtime win over Iowa was one of three 17-10 games the Hawkeyes played.

4. Northwestern leads the nation in fewest penalties per game, with 2.89, and had none against Notre Dame last Saturday.

5. The Wildcats have won 12 of their last 13 Big Ten games. The Hawkeyes have won four of their last nine.

6. However, Northwestern went 0-3 in the nonconference this season. It’s the first time the Wildcats were winless in nonconference play since 1992.

7. Northwestern hasn’t been in Associated Press’ Top Ten since 1996. That was also the last time they were 6-1 in the Big Ten after seven games.

8. Iowa’s last win over a Top Five team in AP’s poll was in 2017. Northwestern’s was in 1959.

9. The Wildcats rank 128th in the nation in rushing yards per carry with 2.6 and last in the Big Ten in rushing yards per game with 93.0. Iowa is allowing 2.9 yards per carry, tied for seventh nationally, and is second in the Big Ten in rushing defense, allowing 86.2 yards per game.

10. Northwestern has 14 college graduates on its team, including quarterback Clayton Thorson.

11. In last year’s Iowa-Northwestern game, the Hawkeyes punted six times for a 53.0-yard average and the Wildcats punted five times for a 50.8-yard average.

12. The University of Iowa is in Johnson County. Northwestern is in Cook County. The Johnson-Cook plasticity model is typically used in adiabatic transient dynamic simulations.

13. Iowa is 0-for-2 in two-point conversions.

14. Northwestern has 20 players from Illinois. Iowa has 16.

15. Northwestern hasn’t won a Big Ten football title since 2000. It hasn’t won a league baseball championship since 1957 or a conference men’s basketball title since 1933.

16. Wildcats is the fourth-most popular Division I nickname behind Bulldogs, Eagles and Tigers. Ten Division I schools are the Wildcats. The others are Abilene Christian, Arizona, Bethune-Cookman, Davidson, Kansas State, Kentucky, New Hampshire, Villanova and Weber State.

17. Northwestern’s Drew Luckenbaugh kicked the game-winning field goal for the Wildcats this season against Northwestern. He helps create apps, and is working on one called “Bar Tap,” to make the process of ordering in a bar easier.

18. Joe Davis will be Fox’s play-by-play announcer for this game. He was a wide receiver and captain on the 2009 Beloit College football team, and did radio announcing for Beloit’s basketball and baseball teams in the offseason.
