Fun Facts: Iowa-Nebraska, Git-R-Done Edition

Huskers Coach Mike Riley was once King of Winnipeg

Hey everybody, have you heard Iowa’s football team is 11-0?

That means the Iowa-Nebraska regular-season finale is important. But fun. But more important. But still fun. Fun enough for ... wait for it ... Fun Facts!

1. This will be Nebraska’s 347th-consecutive sellout, dating to Nov. 3, 1962. That’s still not even halfway to the Boston Red Sox’ sellout string of 830 games that ended during the 2013 season. But Fenway Park has less than half the seating capacity of Memorial Stadium. On the other hand, the Sox play 81 home games a season, the Cornhuskers just seven.

2. Iowa is tied for second in the nation for the fewest passes it’s had intercepted, with three. The national-leader is Navy, but the Middies have attempted just 72 passes. The Hawkeyes have thrown 293. Mississippi State, one of four other teams that has been picked off only three times, has passed 416 times.

3. The visiting team has won the last three games in this series.

4. Nebraska has won 43 conference championships in football, but none since 1999.

5. Iowa quarterback C.J. Beathard is just one of four players from Power 5 conferences who has won his first 12 games as a starter. The others are Cam Newton of Auburn, Darron Thomas of Oregon, and Jameis Winston of Florida State.

6. The Cornhuskers are 19-6 on Black Fridays.

7. Iowa had 24 first downs to Nebraska’s 13 in last year’s meeting in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes ran 29 more plays than the Huskers and had the ball for 15:12 longer. Nebraska won in overtime, 37-34.

8. Iowa is plus-11 in turnover margin. Nebraska is minus-10.

9. This is the first time the Huskers have played two undefeated teams in November. They beat Michigan State on Nov. 14.

10. The Hawkeyes are fifth in the nation in rushing touchdowns (33) and tied for fourth in fewest rushing TDs allowed (7).

11. Nebraska has five losses of five points or less. The only team to beat it by more than five points was Purdue, 55-45. The Boilermakers have defeated no other Big Ten team.

12. Iowa has never scored 30 points in six straight games. It has done so in its last five contests.

13. Nebraska Coach Mike Riley’s overall record as a head coach, counting college and pros, is 163-162. He coached the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to Canadian Football League titles in 1987 and 1990.

14. Riley played for Bear Bryant at Alabama. Riley turned down the chance to be Alabama’s coach when Dennis Franchione left for Texas A&M after the 2002 season.

15. The original name of Lincoln, Neb., was Lancaster. The original name of Lancaster, Pa., was Hickory Town.

16. Kelly Stouffer will be the analyst for ABC’s telecast of this game. He grew up in Rushville, Neb., in the northwest corner of the state, and now lives just outside the town on a ranch. After his retirement as an NFL quarterback, he coached Rushville High’s football team for three years.

17. Stouffer was the sixth player taken in the 1987 NFL draft, by the St. Louis Cardinals. He played four seasons for the Seattle Seahawks, passing for seven touchdowns and 19 interceptions.

18. Nebraska’s unemployment rate in October was 2.9 percent. The only state with a lower rate was North Dakota’s 2.8 percent. Iowa’s was 3.5 percent.

19. Larry the Cable Guy is a big Huskers fan. He is a native of Pawnee City, Neb. He has never actually been a cable guy.

20. In 1982, Bruce Springsteen released an album called “Nebraska.” It was bleak.

From the town of Lincoln, Nebraska with a sawed off .410 on my lap

Through to the badlands of Wyoming I killed everything in my path
