Iowa QB Tyler Wiegers transfers
Iowa's realistic QB depth chart is Stanley, Mansell and Petras
Junior quarterback Tyler Wiegers announced Wednesday that he is transferring to Eastern Michigan.
Wiegers pushed sophomore Nate Stanley for the starting job early this fall. Stanley settled in and should have a three-year run at the position. Wiegers graduated in December and will move on to Eastern as a graduate transfer.
Wiegers is a Lake Orion, Mich., native and a graduate of Detroit Country Day High School. He graduated from Iowa in December with a degree in human physiology.
“We are definitely excited about Tyler coming back to the great state of Michigan to join our program,” EMU head coach Chris Creighton said. “By being here this semester he will have the opportunity to get to know our team, learn our system and compete for the quarterback spot. We cannot wait to get started.”
In four seasons in Iowa City, Wiegers played in eight games for the Hawkeyes. He was 4-for-6 passing for 35 yards, including a 3-yard touchdown pass against Illinois this year.
“I’m excited to join the program here at Eastern Michigan and look forward to the opportunity,” Wiegers said in a statement. “Coach Creighton is building something special and I cannot wait to make an impact. It’s great to be back home in Michigan, close to family, and have the chance to compete for playing time. I am very thankful and excited for the future.”
Wiegers is enrolled in classes at EMU and pursuing a master’s degree in human nutrition.
Of course, this takes a bite out of Iowa’s QB depth chart. Wiegers’ role was the trusty “next man in” who knows the offense and get the key into the ignition. Junior Ryan Boyle remains to be the read-option possibility, but he’s not thrown a pass in his career. Ryan Schmidt will be a junior walk-on next season.
Iowa’s realistic QB depth chart is Stanley, who’ll be a junior with a 26-TD, six-interception season on the resume, redshirt freshman Peyton Mansell and incoming freshman Spencer Petras, who plans to enroll in January.
