American Rivers Conference baseball tournament: Thursday's scores, stats and more

Buena Vista upends Luther in second-round pitchers duel

CEDAR RAPIDS — The American Rivers Conference baseball tournament got started Thursday. Here's a look at the scores and recaps.

LUTHER 11, LORAS 1 (7 INN.)

Luther produced a strong start to its postseason Thursday.

The Norse tallied nine hits, including three from Joe McKibben, and dropped Loras, 11-1, in seven innings to open the American Rivers Conference tournament at Memorial Stadium.

Luther (23-18) opened with one in the top of the first but broke things open in the second. McKibben smacked a two-run home run to right field, helping Luther build a 4-0 lead. McKibben scored twice as well.

The Norse added four in the fourth and a pair in the sixth, taking advantage of a couple errors. Tommy Gleason’s sacrifice fly scored Owen Vander Linden to end the game by mercy rule.

Jake Halverson and Trent Athmann had two hits apiece for the Norse. Luther’s Jake Vogt had two RBIs and scored three times.

Starter Joey Cardamon improved to 6-5 for Luther, throwing all seven innings and allowing one earned run on six hits.

Dylan Pardoe drove in Danny Paluch for Loras’ lone run in the fourth. Paluch led the Duhawks with two hits.

BUENA VISTA 1, LUTHER 0

Buena Vista starter Egan Bonde and reliever Gage Smart didn’t get much support. The lefty duo didn’t need it anyway.

Bonde and Smart combined for a shutout and second-seeded Buena Vista defeated No. 3 Luther, 1-0, in the second round of the American Rivers Conference baseball tournament Thursday at Memorial Stadium.

Bonde threw 7 2/3 innings, allowing just four hits and striking out five. Bonde retired the last 12 batters he faced, improving to 4-1. Smart didn’t give up a hit and earned his sixth save of the season.

Nick Henrichs provided the only offensive the Beavers needed. Henrichs smacked a 1-2 offering over the left-field wall for a home run in the fourth. Bryce Rheault led Buena Vista with two hits.

The Beavers (23-17) move into the winners’ bracket final Friday at 1 p.m. against top-seeded Coe.

COE 10, DUBUQUE 3

Coe baseball has been able to beat opponents in different ways.

The 12th-ranked Kohawks have used pitching and defense to stifle offenses at times. They have relied on their hitters in other instances. This time it was both.

Coe battered Dubuque pitchers for 19 hits, including four from Jacob Burns, in a 10-3 victory over Dubuque in the second round of the American Rivers Conference baseball tournament Thursday at Memorial Stadium. The top-seeded Kohawks (33-3) advance to face No. 2-seed Buena Vista (23-17) in the winners’ bracket final Friday at 1 p.m.

All but one Coe starter had at least one hit and Zach Kammin (9-1) produced a quality start, allowing one run on four hits with nine strikeouts in six innings.

“We definitely swung it well,” Coe Coach Steve Cook said. “We competed right from the get-go and that’s what you want to see.
