2019 Iowa high school baseball preview: Area players to watch

8 players earned first-team all-state honors led by Super Team picks Calvin Harris and Jake Hilmer

With the Iowa high school baseball season beginning Monday, here are 18 Gazette area players to watch this summer.

Rick Atkins, sr., Marion — Posted 5-1 pitching record with 82 strikeouts in 52 2/3 innings and 0.80 ERA. Tallied 26 runs and 34 hits with eight doubles and a home run. Second-team IHSBCA 3A all-state, first-team all-district, first-team all-Wamac.

Hunter Caves, soph., Alburnett — Batted .345 with .445 on-base percentage. Scored 54 runs with 48 hits and 34 RBIs. Second-team all-district.

Harrison Cook, sr., Cedar Rapids Prairie — Batted .370 with 47 hits, including 11 doubles and seven home runs. Drove in 43 and scored 37 runs. Posted .455 on-base percentage. Had 5-2 record with 3.09 ERA, striking out 56 in 34 innings. First-team all-MVC Valley Division, first-team IHSBCA 4A all-state. Kentucky commit.

Sam Goodman, sr., Western Dubuque — Finished 9-1 with 0.65 ERA and was second in 4A with 113 strikeouts in 75 innings. Had .426 on-base percentage and scored 39 runs. First-team IHSBCA 4A all-state. Iowa commit.

Calvin Harris, jr., Western Dubuque — Tied for fifth in 4A with 57 hits. Batted .413 with .518 on-base percentage, 10 doubles, nine triples, eight home runs and 52 RBIs. Had 8-1 record with 0.53 ERA and 100 strikeouts in 53 innings pitched. All-State Super Team by IHSBCA. Ole Miss commit.

Jake Hilmer, sr., North Linn — Batted .511 with 69 hits and .580 on-base percentage, Scored a state-best 74 runs and drove in 41. Stole 46 bases. Posted 9-3 record with 1.14 ERA. Struck out 91 in 67 1/3 innings. All-State Super Team by IHSBCA. Upper Iowa commit.

Haris Hoffman, sr., Cascade — Posted 6-1 record with 0.63 ERA, Batted .416 with .508 on-base percentage. Had 42 hits with 12 doubles and scored 40 runs. Second-team IHSBCA 2A all-state, first-team all-River Valley Conference, first-team all-district.

Chase Keeney, sr., Cedar Rapids Jefferson — Compiled 8-2 record with 1.17 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 59 2/3 innings. Batted .313 with .459 on-base percentage. First-team IHSBCA 4A all-state, first-team all-MVC Mississippi Division. Southeastern CC commit.

Cam Miller, jr., Solon — Compiled 9-3 record with 1.17 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 66 innings. Held opponents to .133 batting average. Batted .322 with .410 on-base percentage. Had 39 hits and 25 RBIs. Second-team IHSBCA 3A all-state, first-team all-district.

Kyle Moeder, sr., Cedar Rapids Xavier — Hit .385 with .481 on-base percentage. Tallied 50 hits, including three home runs, and 43 RBIs. Scored 35 runs. Second-team IHSBCA 3A all-state, first-team all-district, second-team all-MVC Mississippi Division. Kirkwood commit.

Logan Otting, sr., Cascade — Batted .438 with .504 on-base percentage. Drove in 41 and scored 42 runs. Among 2A leaders with 46 hits, including six home runs, eight doubles and four triples. First-team IHSBCA 2A all-state, first-team all-district, first-team River Valley Conference.

Keaton Parker, sr., Alburnett — Batted .404 with 51 RBIs. Eighth in 1A with 55 hits, with 13 doubles, three triples and two home runs. Posted 7-4 record with 89 strikeouts in 64 2/3 innings. Second-team IHSBCA 1A all-state. First-team all-district. Upper Iowa commit.

Garrett Ries, sr., Cedar Rapids Xavier — Batted .312 with .407 on-base percentage and 39 hits, including eight double and seven triples. Threw out 15 of 24 (.625) stolen base attempts. Second-team all-district and all-MVC Mississippi. South Dakota State commit.

Lincoln Riley, sr., Cedar Rapids Washington — Third in 4A with 59 hits, batting .431 with .521 on-base percentage. Scored 36 runs, drove in 20 and stole 22 bases. First-team IHSBCA 4A all-state, first-team all-MVC Valley Division. Southeastern CC commit.

Coy Sarsfield, soph., Linn-Mar — Tied for fourth in 4A with 47 runs. Batted .382 with .489 on-base percentage. Sixth in 4A with 30 stolen bases. Had 42 hits with five doubles. Second-team IHSBCA 4A all-state, first-team all-district, first-team all-MVC Mississippi Division.

Dean Schaull, sr., HLV — Third in 1A with .510 batting average with at least 95 at-bats. Produced .588 on-base percentage with 49 hits and scored 53 runs. Stole 31 bases. First-team IHSBCA all-state.

Jason Strunk, sr., Iowa City West — Batted .342 with .527 on-base percentage. Led MVC Mississippi Division with seven home runs. Scored a team-high 33 runs and drove in 31 RBIs. Second-team all-district, second-team all-MVC Mississippi Division.

Hagen Waters, sr., Lisbon — Batted .456 with .484 on-base percentage. Hit six home runs with 47 RBIs. Posted 4-0 pitching mark. Second-team all-state, first-team all-district.
