In recent comments, Sen. Joni Ernst said, “I am hopeful we can work together with President Joe Biden … in a bipartisan way to deliver for the American people.” She also indicated that she will “always put Iowa’s interests first.”
These sentiments seem not to align with one of the first votes she cast as a member of the 117th Congress, which was to oppose confirmation of Avril Haines as Director of National Intelligence (DNI).
The DNI is the principal adviser to the President, the National Security Council, and the Homeland Security Council for intelligence matters related to national security. In opposing Ms. Haines’ nomination, Sen. Ernst aligned herself with Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Josh Hawley of Missouri and seven others who seem deeply unsatisfied with the Constitution of the United States.
We need to hear why Ernst, in this case, voted differently than Sen. Chuck Grassley. What are Iowa’s interests? Which senator got it right?
