When it comes to seasonal flooding there are some things Iowans can be certain of. We know the spring thaw will bring flooding to Iowa, and we know it will be bad. We know that farms and riverside communities will be disrupted. We know that efforts to combat the flooding will cost the State millions of dollars. We also know that our current efforts fall far short of what is needed to properly control potential damage.
With seasonal flooding looming and Iowans antsy to know if it will be better or worse than last year, it is disappointing to see Senator Joni Ernst discuss this issue without acknowledging that Iowa’s seasonal flooding and other extreme weather are the result of human-driven climate change. When 57 percent of Iowans believe Congress should do more to address global warming, we can’t afford to let our elected officials hold us back.
Iowa’s seasonal flooding and other extreme weather events will only continue to worsen as climate change advances. This is why I encourage readers to contact the offices of both Senators Ernst and Grassley, and urge them to accept the reality of climate change so we can begin to find solutions before it’s too late.
