Vote Finkenauer to battle Trump 'foolishness'

We heard Donald Trump’s campaign: “The forgotten men and women … will be forgotten no longer.” In West Virginia he promised, “Your dreams are my dreams … your future is what I’m fighting for.”

Iowans believed Trump, giving him a 9 percent victory. Regrettably, after 2 years, farmers remain forgotten. Trump’s tax cut gave tiny reductions to the middle class and poor, but huge benefits to the wealthy.

To pay for those cuts, budgets for Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid will be reduced. The working class, who depend on these programs, will lose. Trump’s deficit will soon reach $1 trillion per year.

At the core of Iowa concern is the trade war. Trump tweeted, “Trade wars are good, and easy to win.” In placing tariffs on imports from China, Europe and Canada, he started a trade war. Other countries responded by adding tariffs on imports from the U.S.

Who cares? Iowa! We will pay more for imported goods. Farmers and Iowans working for exporting companies will lose foreign customers. Iowa jobs are at risk. Commodity prices have dropped. Agricultural markets are more unstable. Many farmers will be unable to make a profit.

What about Trump’s $12 billion for farmers? It is less than farmers will lose, increases national debt, and is not a long-term solution.

Vote for a Democratic Congress to battle Trump foolishness. Republicans, like Rod Blum, rubber-stamp his bad policies. Vote for Abby Finkenauer in the 1st Congressional District.

Drain Trump’s swamp and restore sanity to our government.
