Donald and Melania Trump refused to join all other presidents and their wives as they read the Apostles’ Creed at President George H.W. Bush’s funeral. Ironically, Trump received support from more than 80 percent of white evangelical and born-again Christians during the 2016 election. Throughout the funeral it was remarkably obvious that there are distinct differences between Trump and the other former presidents.
Several people, including biographer John Meacham, spoke of the intense honesty, integrity, and selfless humanity that surrounded Bush’s life and presidency. This provided a stark contrast to Trump, who has told the American people thousands of lies and, I suspect, has financially profited from his elected office, while purposefully making our country divisive and combative. Collusion and treason may become a definitive part of his campaign and tenure in the Oval Office.
This is a defining moment in our country’s history and destiny. American lawmakers, and even Trump supporters, will finally need to face the mistake that has occurred in our “democratic state.” I hope they are up to the task and have the intestinal fortitude to correct this grievous error. The American way of life depends upon their actions.
