Trump diversions harm military families

My nephew Dan is a captain in the Marine Corps. He and his wife have a son who just turned nine months old. Military children deserve quality schools and day care, but President Donald Trump is betraying military families by diverting funds to his border wall. Fort Campbell is a case in point. It is the Army base where many troops are deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. The base is one of several hundred projects designed to improve schools and day care centers.

While they are defending our country, military parents cannot count on funding for the welfare of their children. At Fort Campbell, playgrounds are inaccessible, and garbage cans catch water from leaks.

Trump is sending our men and women off to war, with no regard for the families they leave behind. Privately, some government officials see an uphill task to convince lawmakers to put money back in military projects after funds have already been diverted.

President Trump’s allocation of funds without approval of Congress is unconstitutional and makes evident his disrespect for men and women serving our country. He is asking for sacrifice from the children of those making the ultimate sacrifice themselves.
