Reader shares memories of Sears

The recent closing of the Sears store at Lindale Mall brought back memories growing up in Cedar Falls. Once a month on a Saturday afternoon, Dad would load the family station wagon and our destination was the Waterloo downtown Sears store.

Just about everything in our home came from Sears. The washer and dryer, the refrigerator, the deep freezer, stove, television, radio and record player. To the kids out there, if you don’t know what a record player is, ask your grandpa.

The clothes we wore came from Sears. If the store didn’t have what we needed, the catalog did. I guess we were a Sears family!

The only thing in our house that did not come from Sears was the house.

Recall the major retail stores that are no longer in business: Woolworth’s, Montgomery Ward, Kresge, and, locally, Armstrong’s, Killian’s and Younkers.

I wonder if 100 years from now, the hot topic of conversation will be the demise of Walmart?
