In regard to the toxic political divisions sowed under Donald Trump’s presidency: What does it look like for the country’s future if we don’t have a shared sense of reality? What is ahead when nearly half the country no longer believes in the critical infrastructure of our society, i.e., the time-honored, constitutionally-driven way we elect public officials and leaders?
If our citizenry has two different senses of reality, with one side vigorously and relentlessly expressing distrust of our democratic institutions and laws, that’s how a democracy stops functioning. If a one-party system is what Republicans are working toward (with all office seekers from the opposition party or parties universally rejected), we will have lost our precious democracy and acceded to an oligarchy, where “uni-think” reigns.
