On guns, lawmakers have forgotten the majority

The Iowa Legislature is about to vote for a questionable new approach to gun control. This irresponsible plan to loosen gun laws has already passed its first vote and appears to have the support of the governor. Republican Brad Zaun said the proposal’s “strong language” is necessary “in case of laws coming out of D.C. or in case of any court decisions that would weaken our Second Amendment rights.”

The vast majority of Iowans, and Americans, see a need for tightening loopholes for gun sales and a greater need for background checks. Iowa lawmakers have decided to take it upon themselves to advance pro-gun policies, including allowing loaded gun open carry on school grounds.

How vaguely worded gun policies are to be implemented when federal law is tightening loopholes on gun sales without background checks is a question Republicans willing to vote for these irresponsible policies will have to answer.

But the common sense majority has been dismissed. Law enforcement has been disregarded.

Make your voice heard. Call up and call out legislators who are more than happy to put law-abiding citizens’ lives at risk. We need Iowa to remain a state of common sense and safety.
