Letter: Remember to turn the ballot over

Many people have voted early, but if you have not voted yet, it is important to turn the ballot over and vote on the often overlooked choices on the back of the ballot.

Please educate yourself on those issues and cast an informed vote. We have retention elections for our judges and the Christian Right has launched a low-key campaign to vote no on the retention of three highly qualified Iowa Supreme Court Justices.

If you live in Iowa City, please vote yes for “Measure C.” This is a simple measure that will make it easier for citizens to petition the city to put a modification of the city code on the ballot. It will do nothing more than bring Iowa City in line with other Iowa Cities on the standards required for submitting a petition to the city council.

The history of ballot initiatives in Iowa City shows that voter participation goes up when citizen-initiated referenda appear on the ballot. In an age of widespread voter apathy, not to mention voter suppression campaigns, an increase in voter participation can only be a good thing.
