Iowa offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs made his mark on Mount Vernon. Many in town made their mark on him, too. Wirfs and his mother, Sarah, took The Gazette on a tour of his hometown, revisiting scenes around what essentially is the one square mile where he grew up. This story is a little about what can hold you back. This is mostly about what moves you forward.

Kudos to all who helped with refugee garden

Lifting us all up! Empowering! As Sesame Street characters would say, “Cooperation.”

Kudos to all who helped immigrants become more self-sufficient: “Teens Create Garden for Refugees in Hiawatha,” by Molly Duff, July 5. The teens, teachers, Iowa BIG, business owner, Catherine McAuley Center, Matthew 25, the Hiawatha City Council, the immigrants who are tending the gardens, and all others who have supported this — i.e. parents and citizens of Hiawatha. Empowering others empowers each of us.

That all are following up and maintaining the gardens and project is heartening. More power to the positive!
