Kavanaugh outburst showed temperament

Brett Kavanaugh is unfit for the Supreme Court; indeed, he should not be allowed to remain as a federal circuit court judge. His partisan, angry outburst during the Sept. 27 hearing conclusively showed he lacks the controlled, dispassionate, neutral demeanor to be a credible federal appellate judge and cannot be trusted with such power.

I witnessed an attempted sexual assault as a youth, an event that I still do not completely remember. I know women who have survived sexual assaults. Dr. Christine Blasey Ford showed formidable courage in coming forward; yet, she has been the target of scurrilous attacks by GOP partisans. Ford is a hero to me; Kavanaugh is a despicable example of ruling- class privilege who thinks he can act with impunity.

U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., is the only Republican senator so far who has shown integrity. Sen. Chuck Grassley shamed himself and our state. The only way forward I see is for Kavanaugh to withdraw, and for President Donald Trump to nominate Merrick Garland for the open Supreme Court seat. Anything less is a declaration of war on women, LGBTQ people, and those Americans who voted against Trump.
