Sen. Joni Ernst has let down Iowans, and we believe Democrat Mike Franken is best equipped to beat her. Ernst shows blind loyalty to Trump, voting for tax cuts that favor the rich at the expense of all others, voting for repeal of ACA and its preexisting conditions coverage, and allowing Trump’s rollbacks on environmental protections. Franken has shown courage to go against the grain, being the only no vote on invading Iraq while serving on a military planning board preparing for the operation.
While we respect Ernst’s military service the GOP often touts, Franken’s is more extensive — 36 years in the Navy, rank of admiral, and first hand pandemic experience, having helped lead the U.S. response to the Ebola crisis. He also has Washington experience serving on Ted Kennedy’s senate staff.
Ernst runs on her rural roots but Franken also grew up on an Iowa farm plus worked in a hog processing plant to pay for college. His degree is in engineering with a masters in physics, and he believes in science and the seriousness of the climate crisis and its impact on Iowa’s farmers, ag economy and us all.
Our June 2 primary vote goes to Franken, the best chance to beat Ernst and truly help Iowans.
