Iowa offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs made his mark on Mount Vernon. Many in town made their mark on him, too. Wirfs and his mother, Sarah, took The Gazette on a tour of his hometown, revisiting scenes around what essentially is the one square mile where he grew up. This story is a little about what can hold you back. This is mostly about what moves you forward.

Fentanyl is a necessary medical tool

One of U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst’s social media accounts recently posted that she is co-sponsoring a bill to reassign fentanyl as a Schedule 1 drug. I feel compelled to say that she unequivocally and absolutely has no idea what she is talking about.

I am a certified registered nurse anesthetist, and I provide anesthesia care to thousands of patients a year. One of the drugs I rely on most in the operating room is fentanyl. It is unmatched in its ability to treat perioperative pain. Moving forward with this asinine bill would have extraordinarily deleterious effects on literally every patient getting surgery.

Ernst needs to do some research, to actually ask people who administer this drug daily and patients who require this drug for surgical pain.
