I am thrilled about the presidential candidates, but I worry that if we don’t make a change in our representatives locally, all of those dreams will just get pushed aside.
For example, Sen. Joni Ernst has been a cheerleader in the removal of the Affordable Care Act. If successful, hundreds of thousands of Iowans would lose their pre-existing condition protections, including Iowans that receive insurance through their employers.
As someone who personally is self-employed and paying well over $1000 a month in healthcare for my family, I welcome the idea of universal healthcare but if Ernst remains in office, that possibility will get tabled. She may listen to stories from people like myself who struggle daily to make ends meet but will vote according to what her party wants, even if it’s not in the best interest of the majority.
I am not sure who will be running against Ernst, but I do know who I will be voting for. I will be voting for affordable health care. I will vote for the person who will fight against giving tax cuts to the 1 percent. I will be voting for a Green New Deal that will offer solutions and changes that help protect our planet. The fight isn’t just in the presidential race, it’s local. We need someone who will fight for us and vote with their heart and not their party.
