For many years I was an instrumental music teacher in the public school system in Iowa City. Among the duties was teaching fifth- and sixth-graders to play instruments and playing together.
One of them was Janice Weiner, the one who is running for State Senate in District 37. She was my flute student and played in the band that I directed for two years. Also, I became friends with her parents, stopping on occasion at their house near Coralville Central to chat.
When Weiner moved home after her foreign service career, I ran into her at an Iowa City Community/New Horizons Band concert. (She was playing in the first, I in the second.) She told me she had played wherever she had been posted abroad and was grateful to have learned this international language.
Playing in a band or orchestra is a team undertaking — everyone has their role — sometimes in the background, sometimes in the lead. In the state senate, she will know when to be in the background, working issues, and when to be in the lead.
I know my students — she will be terrific.
