Candidate photos convey stereotypes

We have been hearing a lot about sexism in the reporting of the Democratic presidential candidates. The Gazette printed an article from the Washington Post in the Sunday June 23 edition. Did you really look at the pictures you published with the article?

Male candidates: Joe Biden: photographed from below, appearing serious and “presidential.” Bernie Sanders: photographed from below and looking serious. Pete Buttigieg: smiling

Female candidates: Kamala Harris: caught at an odd moment with her jaw slightly misaligned and mouth open. Kirsten Gillibrand: mouth open and appears haranguing. Elizabeth Warren: mouth open and also appears scolding.

These photographs continue to reinforce the stereotype that intelligent, serious women are only capable of scolding, berating and criticizing. There are photographs of all the female candidates that would make them appear serious and “presidential.”
