I am old enough to remember when Communist Party spokespersons were called “apparatchiks.” This was a term essentially meaning part of the “party machine,” or a cog in the system of the political party in power.
The party head was always a populist authoritarian strongman with an angry demeanor spewing hatred for anyone not sticking to the party line. This is how communists kept a corrupt regime in power. Above all they hated transparency and embraced any lie that deflected real accountability.
I cannot help but see the resemblance with GOP leaders, including Sen. Chuck Grassley, desperately trying to prevent transparent access to their dear leader’s records of accountability.
Today we see GOP leaders trying to prevent access by Congressional Oversight to public official’s testimony and Mueller Report suggested evidence of potential wrongdoing. Despite the fact that Congress is, after all, the body mandated to assure checks and balance that sustain our Democratic Republic.
I am old enough to remember Khrushchev saying, “We will defeat you from within.” Then I thought he was crazy. Now I think he understood our vulnerabilities better than we did.
