I attended the Democrats’ Hall of Fame Dinner June 9. All presidential candidates speaking put Donald Trump to shame with their ability to deliver thoughts in a comprehensible manner, but I liked Sen. Bernie Sanders the best. For years, Bernie has advocated for universal health care, what he calls “Medicare for All.” He is one of the few candidates discussing what must be done to slow climate change and limit the damage if the issue is left unaddressed. He supports “The Green New Deal” and tuition-free college for young leaders of the future. As a former state legislator, I appreciate the breadth of his actions and the energy it takes to work for them.
During the 2016 election, Sanders proposed solutions that other candidates did not endorse. Considered by some to be too “radical,” it now seems that everything Sanders proposed in 2016 is on their agenda! He led the way; now they are all following! That’s the mark of a true leader in my opinion.
Some people believe his age is a negative, however before the Hall of Fame, while all the younger presidential candidates were holding court in an air-conditioned hotel, Bernie was marching downtown in Iowa’s heat with McDonald’s workers striking for a living wage. When it comes to health care, climate and workers rights Bernie not only talks solutions, he walks with the people to implement them. He is definitely my choice for president.
