Abortion amendment would endanger women

What do Republicans have against Iowa women?

They rant on about “preserving life” while unwanted pregnancies and abortions could be prevented by contraceptive help from Planned Parenthood — which they defunded.

Planned pregnancies are important as many women provide the essential income or share providing the income for their family. We have moved beyond the “barefoot and pregnant” era, which often resulted in poor health and early death for many women.

So now an unplanned pregnancy for many women can result in the loss of her income, job, housing and food for her existing children. Sadly these unfortunate circumstances give a pregnant woman the unfortunate choice of an abortion. For the well-being of the mother and her ability to continue to care for her family, abortion needs to be provided in a safe medical environment. Without that facility the desperate mother has to resort to a “back street” abortion.

This procedure has many tragic consequences, severe hemorrhage, infection & death. I am a nurse and I shall never forget a young patient who was more dead than alive with kidney failure after having a back street abortion. With hospital care she lived, had she been found a few hours later she would have died.

As in so many cases the boyfriend had said he loved her and would take care of her etc., same old story. Then when she was pregnant the boyfriend disappeared. Please use some common sense and make provision for medically safe care for pregnant women in desperate circumstances.
