Letters to the Editor

A new beginning, but with the same COVID politics

I am sure I’m not alone in welcoming 2021 to the table. Along with thousands of Iowans, I await the delivery of the vaccines that can return us to the public health conditions we took for granted in 2019. Those of us who have survived the governmental missteps of 2020, by listening to the scientists and not the GOP state and national leadership, can now look forward to a long awaited return to normal. While we must continue to practice mask-wearing, hand washing and social distancing to contain the spread of COVID-19, we can anticipate turning things around by inoculating with one of the life saving vaccines when they become available. These are all well reported facts and nothing new.

Imagine my consternation, opening my Gazette on Jan. 3 and reading that Iowa House Speaker Pat Grassley and his GOP colleagues in the Legislature have again chosen to ignore science by not requiring mask wearing in the Capitol. Can someone fill these advocates of idiocy in on the benefits of mask wearing and personal hygiene? I would appreciate a little cooperation in my effort to survive until my shot becomes available, as I am sure the other 3.2 million Iowans would agree. That time of fearing reprisals from the White House has passed, if you have any questions Pat, feel free to consult any Iowa first-grader, they have possession of the facts!
