2020 resolution: Room for improvement on helping sick Iowans

At the end of each year, we set resolutions for next year. We resolve to exercise, lose weight, or connect with friends more. If we can just complete these resolutions, we hope that our quality of life will improve.

But for too many Iowans, it’s difficult or impossible to imagine completing resolutions like these. That’s because the pain and suffering from severe conditions like cancer, chronic pain, or MS is often too overwhelming.

Fortunately, we’ve legalized a form of treatment for these Iowans – medical cannabis. Unfortunately, Iowa’s program is one of the costliest and most restrictive in the country.

MedPharm Iowa resolves to fight for improvements to Iowa’s medical cannabis program, including increased access for patients suffering from conditions like PTSD and measures that decrease patients’ cost.

We’re hopeful citizens across the state resolve to learn more about medical cannabis, and that they’ll contact their legislators to push for change. We’re hopeful legislators resolve to pass a bill that increases access for sick Iowans and provides meaningful doses of THC and CBD – without forcing any patients to taper their doses.

We’ve shown medical cannabis can help so many – now let’s provide it for all of those suffering from severe conditions.

Lucas Nelson is general manager of MedPharm Iowa, one of the state’s licensed cannabidiol producers.
