Both Sens. Joni Ernst and Chuck Grassley need to honor their previous remarks on filling a supreme court seat during an election year. Both had refused to fill a seat that was vacated during the last year of President Barack Obama’s term.
With the passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, we must ask that our elected Senators wait until after the inauguration of the president to fill the seat in the highest courts in the land.
Currently, the Senate is led by Republicans and the House is led by Democrats. This election could change the dynamics of Congress and could see the election of a new president. Not only had both Ernst and Grassley set the precedent of not filling a seat during an election year, but the election has already begun. At least eight states have already started early voting. In Iowa, we will start voting in two weeks.
Ernst and Grassley must not act to fill the open Supreme Court seat. This action must be left to those elected after November 3 and those who will be representing their respective seats after this election.
