I am writing as a candidate for the Linn-Mar Community Schools, board of directors. I was a teacher at Bowman Woods Elementary for 40 years. During my time there, I served on numerous district and building committees, including being appointed chair of the building leadership team many times.
As a teacher, I worked hard to address the various needs of my students, guiding each to reach their potential. Caring about our students’ success is my major focus. I believe my years of teaching provide a unique perspective of where we have been and where we need to go.
After retiring from teaching, I was elected to the Linn-Mar school board. I have served on the Policy, Finance, Career and Technical Education, Facilities and Bond committees. Each committee reviewed pertinent data to help guide our district to be the best it could be.
For the past two years I have been the board president. In that capacity, I have encouraged the board to engage in discussion, explore ideas, listen to other points of view, and get all the needed facts to make informed decisions. Working in a collaborative manner, productive dialogue occurred to build trust, leading to the hiring of our present superintendent.
Deploying our revised strategic plan, we will foster student success, be future focused and strive to make Linn-Mar a continued destination school district. Hiring the best teachers, addressing diversity and equity, and always thinking of safety at our schools, are priorities for me.
With our ten year facilities plan as our guide, we will evaluate all of the space available before proceeding to build new structures. Considering class size and spending money wisely is important to me. Allowing for revising and flexibility of the plan will ensure success. Passing the bond, making it possible to build the new intermediate schools, is an example of this plan at work.
I have been an active member of the Linn-Mar community. I have taught, mentored, volunteered in classrooms and been a leader on the board of directors. I regularly attend events at schools and proudly represent the Board at functions with the city and state. I truly care about where we are headed and want to be a part of leading us forward.
