My family moved to Marion three years ago, specifically for the quality education provided by the Linn-Mar district. My son is now a first-grader and thriving.
For 15 years I have worked in nonprofit education — primarily as director of communications developing and implementing career and college readiness programs and curriculum in nearly every high school in the state. I’ve also helped students and parents plan for life after high school. Through this work I have developed a passion for education because I have seen the opportunities education creates for students, and their families.
I am running for the school board because I believe the bedrock of our success as individuals, families and as a community lie in a strong education system. A community that invests in education finds success, and I want to help Linn-Mar grow and enable every student to find their pathway to success.
Linn-Mar is full of opportunities, but there’s a lot of big decisions to ensure those opportunities are fulfilled. As a growing community we will have continued conversations about infrastructure. I want to ensure we are focused on student and educator needs — smaller class sizes and lower ratios between our faculty and students.
I also recognize the need to find balance between changing education standards and initiatives, and the adequate training and implementation. Through my work, and discussions with Linn-Mar educators, I have a clear understanding of issues impacting students and educators, and the struggles to bring new initiatives, safety, and social/emotional learning together toward successful outcomes.
My professional experiences provide skills I believe can benefit these discussions. As an eight year member of the Iowa School Counselor Association board, and working with my nonprofit board, I understand the role and collaborative spirit of board work. I also recognize that positive outcomes come from sharing different perspectives and experiences.
I will encourage dialogue and value all input. My decisions will be based in data, with feedback from those closest to the subject. I will lead with facts when navigating different opinions, working to find common ground and successful outcomes.
