Gjerde: Put politics aside, do what's right for Iowa

Eric Gjerde is a Democratic candidate for Iowa House District 67.

My family is my foundation and who I consider when making any decision; running for Iowa House is not unique.

My wife Amy and I have three daughters. Grace is 10 and our twins, Caroline and Ella, are 7. I knew from the moment I became a father that I would do anything and everything to take care of our children. Our twin daughters were born prematurely and have a phonological disorder because of hearing problems since birth. Ultimately these hearing deficits affect their speech. When they started school, they would come home upset because their friends had difficulty understanding what they were saying.

As any parent can relate, when your child needs help, you will stop at nothing to make sure they get it. You can imagine the frustration my wife and I felt every time our insurance company refused to help our girls because of a preexisting condition. As a high school special educator, it is my job to advocate for all my students and their families each day. When I was unable to advocate for two of the three children who I love more than any others and knew the system as well I did, I knew there had to be other families struggling to get the health care their families need. This was the moment that I vowed to make sure no other family had to go through a similar situation and decided to be a candidate for the Iowa State House in District 67.

I am running for the Iowa House to be a voice for those who feel left behind by our current system. I will advocate not just for high quality and affordable health care, but also smaller class sizes for our public schools, collective bargaining rights for all of Iowa’s public workers, a livable minimum wage that local municipalities can set and transparency in government like we haven’t seen. I will work for all Iowas in House District 67. Regardless of weather it is boosting main street, opening schools safely or investing in our infrastructure, I will put politics aside and do what is right for Iowa. As your state representative in House District 67, I will work each day to make sure that you are heard and feel valued. I would be honored to earn your vote in this election and know we can make Iowa work together.
