UI student faces felony charge after dorm room theft

Police say stolen laptop, bedding found in suspect's vehicle

IOWA CITY — A University of Iowa student faces a felony charge after allegedly stealing a laptop from a dorm room last week.

According to a University of Iowa Department of Public Safety criminal complaint, an officer responded to Hillcrest Residence Hall around 1:30 a.m. Jan. 28 for a burglary report. The victim reported that his dorm room had been entered and his Apple Mac Book Pro laptop and bedding were missing.

Police said the victim told them he believed his property was taken by 19-year-old Allison A. O’Connell, a UI student from Lake Villa, Ill. Officers later spoke with O’Connell who said the laptop was in the vehicle she was driving, but she refused to let officers search the vehicle.

Police impounded O’Connell’s vehicle and obtained a search warrant. The laptop and bedding were found in O’Connell’s vehicle, police said.

O’Connell was arrested and faces one count of third-degree burglary, a Class D felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
