Two Cedar Rapids men face charges stemming from the shooting of a 3-year-old child earlier this month.
Tristian Robin Robertson, 20, and Vachon Stevenson Robertson Jr., 19, both of Cedar Rapids, face charges of false reports of an indictable offense following an Aug. 5 incident where a 3-year-old boy arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg.
According to the criminal complaint filed with Linn County District Court, the men took the child to a hospital and told police that they were playing in the park at Cleveland Elementary when an unidentified person shot at them, hitting the child in the leg.
However, the treating physician told police the child’s wound indicated the shot was fired at close range, according to the complaint.
Investigators also reviewed security footage from the school, which showed the report made by the defendants about the shooting was false, the complaint said.
The charge of false reports of an indictable offense is a serious misdemeanor.
Cedar Rapids public safety spokesperson Greg Buelow said an investigation is ongoing related to Tristian and Vachon Robertson’s involvement in the shooting. He did not provide any additional details regarding whether they men are related to the 3-year-old or if additional charges would be filed.
