Gilbert Street now reopened to traffic after train derailment cleared in Iowa City

IOWA CITY — Update 4:47 p.m.: According to the city of Iowa City, the tracks have been cleared and Gilbert Street is now open again.

A train has derailed in Iowa City and is blocking traffic.

According to social media posts from the Iowa City Police Department, Gilbert Street just north of Benton Street is blocked in both directions due to a train derailment. Police said the train is off the track and cannot move without “some mechnical intervention.”

Authorities said traffic will be blocked “for some time” and urged motorists to find an alternative route.
