Police arrested a 78-year-old man over the weekend after investigating claims he sexually abused a young girl over a period of two years.
Harry Hoffon of Cedar Rapids faces two counts of second-degree sexual abuse. According to a criminal complaint, the child was under the age of 12 when the abuse occurred between Jan. 1, 2010 and Jan. 1, 2012 at a residence in the 1300 block of 19th Avenue SW.
According to the Cedar Rapids Police Department, investigators were notified of the alleged abuse on Aug. 30.
According to the complaint, the child was able to describe “in clear detail,” how her alleged abuser “committed a series of sex acts upon her … when she was between 6 and 8 years of age.”
The child identified her abuser as Hoffon, according to the complaint.
Police interviewed Hoffon, who admitted “he engaged in inappropriate physical contact with the victim during the time frame and under the circumstances she had described,” the complaint states.
Police said the Linn County Attorney’s Office issued an arrest warrant, charging Hoffon with two counts of second-degree sexual abuse.
Hoffon was taken into custody Saturday and made his initial appearance Monday in Linn County District Court where a judge issued an order granting his request for a public defender and set bond at $70,000 cash.
