Iowa City man arrested for allegedly robbing ATM user

An Iowa City man was arrested Monday morning in connection with a robbery that occurred in May.

According to the Iowa City Police Department, Ricky D. Johnson, 27, was arrested on charges of second-degree robbery after he allegedly stole several hundred dollars in cash from an ATM user.

Police said the victim had used a University of Iowa Community Credit Union ATM at 2525 Muscatine Avenue just before midnight on May 1. The victim then walked to his home in the 2700 block of Wayne Avenue.

As the victim reached his apartment building, police said Johnson approached the victim, claimed he knew the victim had money and demanded the cash.

The victim refused, police said, at which point Johnson allegedly pushed the victim down and held his face to the ground while going through his pockets. Johnson then fled with the $500.

The victim suffered a laceration to his mouth that required sutures.

Police said the victim was acquainted with Johnson and was able to identify him as the robber and provide a suspect description.
