Man faces theft charges after allegedly stealing bicycle wheels, police say

CEDAR RAPIDS — Police arrested a Cedar Rapids man Sunday after he allegedly stole tires off two bicycles parked outside a downtown business.

According to the police department, officers responded just after 2 p.m. to Local Pour Street Food at 302 Third Ave. SW to investigate the theft of bicycle tires.

Police said one of the restaurant employees and a customer reported a tire stolen off each of their bicycles parked outside the business.

During their investigation, police obtained video surveillance that showed the suspect taking the rear tire and rim off one bike and the front tire and rim off the second bike. Police said the suspect was identified Thomas Ray Carlson, 35, and determined he already had an existing third-degree burglary charge.

Police said officers located Carlson just after 6 p.m. near Second Avenue and 15th Street Southeast. A news release states Carlson attempted to evade officers on his bicycle, but was apprehended in the 1400 block of Bever Avenue Southeast on charges of fourth-degree theft and the warrant for third-degree burglary. Police said Carlson also faces a charge of interference with official acts.
