Iowa Tribune Content Agency OTTUMWA — One of the most extensive manhunts in recent Ottumwa memory is over, but the investigation into what happened will continue.
Ottumwa Police Department Chief Tom McAndrew sent a final press release of the day just before midnight Friday.
“Due to this being an officer involved shooting; the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation will conduct the remainder of the investigation,” McAndrew wrote Friday.
That’s the day in which, at 1:42 p.m., the OPD received a call reporting shots fired in the 800 block of South Lillian Street. A caller advised that one subject had been shot. Officers responding to the area of the shooting were advised that three male subjects involved in the shooting were fleeing the area on foot. The subjects were reported to be running west bound in a creek.
If that was true, police believed the armed suspects would quickly come upon Liberty Elementary School off of Mary Street. Officers immediately responded to school parking lot; they confronted three male subjects approaching the school.
According to McAndrew’s press release, at 1:49 p.m., officers came under fire. Officers returned fire.
Police on the scene then found two of the male subjects in a field area behind Liberty. Both subjects sustained injuries. Both subjects were transported to the Wapello County Rural Fire Department, which was being used as a command center by police and rescue personnel. The two injured subjects received medical treatment, the chief said. One of the male subjects was pronounced dead at the fire station. The second male subject was transported to Ottumwa Regional Health Center and later transported to another hospital.

The chief notes, without detail, that a third wounded male subject had actually been shot back at the original scene of the shooting: 831 South Lillian Street. That unidentified individual was transported to Ottumwa Regional Health Center and later transported to another hospital.
Numerous law enforcement officers responded to the area of Liberty Elementary School to assist the Ottumwa Police Department in locating the third male subject. After an extensive search of the area, a third male subject was located hiding in a wooded area near the scene of the incident. That subject was taken to the Wapello County Jail on an outstanding arrest warrant for escape/absence from custody.
Due to the nature of the investigation, McAndrew states, any additional information concerning this incident will be released by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
