CEDAR RAPIDS — One person is dead and another person has been hospitalized after a shooting incident that appears to have stemmed from a domestic situation in Cedar Rapids.
Cedar Rapids police said the deceased person — whose wounds were self-inflicted — appears to have been the person who shot the other victim. The names of the people involved have not been released.
Cedar Rapids public safety spokesman Greg Buelow said officers were called 639 40th St. SE at 4:40 a.m. for a report of a shooting. Responding officers found a 35-year-old man inside the home suffering from several gunshot wounds. He was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Outside of the home, police found a 30-year-old man outside of the residence. Police said he was dead from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The man with the self-inflicted gunshot wound had been in a relationship with a woman who lived at the home, police said.
Police said the woman and several children inside the home were not injured. While the shooting took place inside the residence, Buelow said the woman and children were not “in proximity” to the victim when he was shot.
The shooting took place close to Erskine Elementary School. However, Cedar Rapids Community School District spokeswoman Awki Nji said after reaching out to police, they were informed that there was no threat to the public or school that required a lockdown or other safety precautions.
