New charges filed in connection with Iowa City shots fired incident

IOWA CITY — One of the men initially arrested following a December shots fired incident now has been accused of participating in the group assault.

Iowa City police said in criminal complaints 22-year-old Brandon L. Juniel, of Iowa City, and five other suspects blocked a roadway near the intersection of Amber Lane and Lakeside Rive at about 12:30 p.m. Dec. 4, 2017.

Police said the victim arrived home, but could not pass the group and confronted the individuals. At that point the group assaulted the man.

The victim told police someone in the group fired a gun in his direction and he heard something fly by his head after the gunshot. Police said a shell casing was found on the scene and a gunshot could be heard on a nearby security video.

A surveillance video showed six individuals fleeing the scene after the assault and gunshot, with Iowa City residents — Victor B. Jones, 18; Dimione J. Walker, 24; Daivon D. Jones, 18 and Dearl R. Johnson, 20 — arrested soon after and charged with interference with official acts. Juniel and the juvenile also were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana.

Police say 18-year-old Sydney Howard, also of Iowa City, was later identified on security video footage as the sixth suspect.

Victor Jones, Walker, Daivon Jones, Howard and now Juniel also face charges of willful injury causing bodily injury, a Class D felony; assault with intent to inflict serious injury, an aggravated misdemeanor; and participating in a riot; an aggravated misdemeanor. If convicted, they could face up to nine years in prison.

As of Monday, Juniel, Walker and Daivon Jones were being held in the Johnson County Jail.
