CEDAR RAPIDS — Sixth Judicial District judges appointed Cynthia Finley on Wednesday as a new associate district court judge.

Finley has been a magistrate in the district since August 2007. She will start with the district court Dec. 14, according to court officials.

Finley, along with Assistant Muscatine County Attorney Joan Black and Assistant Linn County Attorney Kelly Kaufman, were nominated by the Linn and Benton County Magistrate Nominating Commission for the position. The district judges then appoint by majority an associate district judge.

Finley will replace 6th Judicial District Associate Juvenile Court Judge Susan Flaherty who will retire Dec. 13. She has served since 1995, twice retained in the 2010 and 2016 elections.

Finley earned her bachelor’s degree from Clemson University in 1984 and her law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1994.
