North Liberty man fraudulently collected $77,000 in unemployment, records show

A North Liberty man is accused of fraudulently collecting unemployment checks totaling more than $77,000 over the course of eight years.

According to court documents, Gerardo Hernandez, 50, first-degree fraudulent practice, a Class C felony.

Court records state Hernandez “fraudulently received 193 weeks of Iowa Unemployment Insurance benefits in the total amount of $77,381.80 between Nov. 30, 2008, and Feb. 6, 2016, from Iowa Workforce Development in Des Moines.”

A warrant was issued for Hernandez’s arrest on Nov. 13, and he was taken into custody Monday. Hernandez made his first appearance in Johnson County District Court on Tuesday.

In addition to having to pay the unemployment wages back to the state, court documents show Hernandez could face a 15 percent penalty, bringing the total amount owed up to more than $88,800.
