CEDAR RAPIDS — If one were to make a list of worst places to commit a burglary, a police department parking lot would probably be near the top of the list.
That didn’t stop one Cedar Rapids man, however.
According to the Linn County Attorney’s Office, 27-year-old Alex M. Thompson climbed the fence at the Cedar Rapids Police Department around 3:53 a.m. Thursday. Thompson then got into the personal vehicle of a Cedar Rapids Police Officer.
Authorities said Thompson had taken several items out of the glove box of the car at the time he was caught. Thompson was arrested and has been charged with third-degree theft, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in prison; and criminal trespass, a simple misdemeanor punishable by up to 30 days in jail.
Thompson has an extensive criminal history in Linn County, with convictions for conspiracy to commit a felony, possession of a controlled substance, drunken driving and criminal mischief, among other offenses.
