CORALVILLE — An Iowa Medical and Classification Center inmate attacked another inmate and a guard last month using two makeshift weapons, police said.
According to Coralville police, around 7:30 a.m. Oct. 30, 19-year-old Derrick E. Reimers attacked another inmate in the shower. Police said Reimers used a toothbrush with a screw tied to the end and a pen with a screw tied to the end as weapons in the assault.
Police said a guard responded and attempted to stop the attack, but Reimers struck him in the back of the neck with the toothbrush weapon. The attack caused the guard to bleed from the back of his neck, police said.
Reimers allegedly admitted to committing the assault because the inmate had insulted him the night before. He has been arrested and faces charges of willful injury causing bodily injury and assault on persons in certain occupations with a weapon.
According to online court records, Reimers was sentenced to two years in prison in June 2016 for assault with intent to commit sexual abuse.
