Iowa City man arrested in rake assault

Police say victim identified attacker as former friend

IOWA CITY — An Iowa City man is accused of attacking his former friend with a rake.

According to an Iowa City police criminal complaint, officers responded to a report of an assault in progress at CVS Pharmacy, 2425 Muscatine Ave., at 10:40 a.m. on Oct. 24.

Upon arrival, officers encountered the male victim, who was on the ground and regaining consciousness, police said. There was a broken garden rake next to the victim and multiple people around him.

Witnesses told police they saw the victim doing landscaping in the parking lot at CVS when another man approached him, punched him in the head and knocked him unconscious. Police said after the victim fell to the ground, the man began to kick him and hit him with the garden rake until it broke. The man then fled from the scene and was gone before officers arrived.

Police said the victim was able to identify his attacker as 33-year-old Roshun K. Gilmore, a former friend with whom he had a falling out. Part of the attack was also captured by CVS surveillance cameras, police said.

Police said the victim suffered a concussion and bruising to the side of his face and jaw.

Gilmore has been arrested and faces one count of willful injury causing bodily injury, a Class D felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
